NevOn: The characteristics of a great employer…. er… church?

02Nov05

With fear and trepidation of being called an emerging church heretic…. NevOn: The characteristics of a great employer: “The characteristics of a great employer”… er church?

* Trust their staff to make the right decisions

* Take customer service seriously

* Cut jobs only as a last resort

* Share rewards with everyone, not just senior management

* Tend to have longer-serving chief executives

* Offer benefits well beyond what is required by law

* Respond to emerging trends, such as demands for flexible working, or networks for minorities

* Have been around long enough to establish a strong culture and sense of belonging

I know, I know… applying business book stuff to the church is SO 1990s. But really. What if I translated it this way:

* Trust their members/participants to make the right decisions

* Take listening to people outside their community (aka those formerly known as “lost”) seriously

* Un-invite only as a last resort

* Share rewards with everyone, not just staff/clergy

* Tend to have longer-serving pastors/leaders

* Offer benefits well beyond what is required by the status-quo

* Respond to emerging trends, such as blogs, wikis, and networked spirituality

* Have been around long enough to establish a strong culture and sense of belonging (um… ditto).

Heretic? Sure, why not.
